

On Monday evening, January 16th 2012 the club president, Gigi Oeri was given a send off to remember; 553 present members of FC Basel 1893 honoured Gigi Oeri, who passed on her title, accompanied by several standing ovations. The newly elected president, 48 year old Bernard Heusler was welcomed with equal enthusiasm. Heuslers vote was passed by acclamation as was the announcement of Gigi Oeri as honorary president.
A night to remember: On Wednesday (07.12.11) FC Basel in their final group stage Champions League match beat mighty Manchester United 2:1 (1:0) at St. Jakob’s Park. In so doing Basel are the first Swiss team ever, to reach the last sixteen knock out stage of Europe’s toughest competition (draw held on Friday the 16th of December 2011)! In an outstanding, overall team performance, Marco Streller (9.) and Alex Frei scored against the Red Devils, who hold England’s record for most league titles. FC Basel won 3:2 (3:0) on Tuesday, 22nd of November 2011, away to FC Otelul Galati in their 5th game of this year’s Champions League campaign. Highly efficient FC Basel celebrated with goals from Fabian Frei, Alex Frei and Captain Marco Streller – who scored his 1st ever Champions League goal on the night! Despite having some difficulties in the last 15 minutes of the game, the Swiss champions secured the win. Basel can book a place in the next stage of the competition, with a victory over Manchester United – who drew 2:2 against Benfica Lisbon.
