Behind the Young Boys (Bern), FC Basel is in second place in the  "Central Switzerland" group and thereby reaches its highest classification to date, since 1893. The Championship was contested by 14 teams, in 3 groups. In the "Central Switzerland Group" FC Basel, Old Boys Basel, Fortuna Basel as well as Excelsior and three other “City Clubs” participated in the Championship. The victor of this group was the Young Boys (Bern), who took part in the Final against the FC Zurich.  FC Zurich won and became Champions.

The first Championship match in Swiss football history was without FC Basel. Champions were the Grasshoppers Zurich and not for their last time in their club’s history! The Final’s Referee was FC Basel Goalie
Tollmann. In the Final the Grasshoppers (GC) won 6 to 1 against Villa Longchamp Lausanne.

The year 1896 saw two club President changes. Roland Geldner, the founding President, resigned and Emanuel Scheiss replaced him. In the same year, he passed this burden on to Charlie Volderauer.

In 1897 FC Basel Membership figures reached for the first time 100 (37 active, 63 passive).

On the 15th November, Roland Geldner, Ferdinand Isler, Jean Grieder and Emil Abderhalden become the founding members of FC Basel 1893. These men are both rowers and gymnasts. They choose red and blue as the club colours, due to the fact that Basel rowing club also has these as their club colours.

FCB plays its first game on the 10th December. The result is a 2:0 victory for FCB against Realschülerturnverein Basel.
