To deal with the miserable team performance sport wise, FC Basel President Carl Burkhardt, the successor of Franz Rinderers, employs German Head Coach Max Beuning. He becomes the second Head Coach in the Club’s 30 year history, after Percy Humphreys, who was employed before the First World War. |

Ranked seventh, in a group of eight teams, FC Basel, by the skin of its teeth, avoids relegation out of Series A into the First League for the first time. A victory against FC Luzern, who was only two points aggregate behind the FC Basel, keeps FC Basel in Series A. |

In May, 1920 the Swiss National Team competed for the first time since the end of the war – in Basel. The Swiss team won against Holland, though FC Basel players were not in the national team that was reviewed the by the Referee’s Commission. Basel’s honour was defended by Pollitz of Young Boys and Bürgin of FC Nordstern. FC Basel then employed in these two years, two foreign players. The Hungarian, Schaffer and the Austrian, Gustav Putzendopler, who stood before a long career as player, and short one as Head Coach in Basel (1930 / 1931). |

One year after its 25th anniversary, one year after the First World War’s end, FC Basel celebrates again: It is Swiss Club Champion, unfortunately not in football, but light athletics. In fact, it was the last great success of the athletic section, before it later sank into obscurity. |

As the war came to an end in 1918, 420,000 of the total 920,000 square meters of Swiss football pitch had been turned into potato fields. As soon as the war ended, FC Basel started as the first club in Switzerland , to play international matches again. Starting with a match in Freiburg (Breisgau) against FC Freiburg, the Germans won 2:1. |
