Xherdan Shaqiri joined FC Basel 1893 as a 10 year old boy, moving from the local side SV Augst in 2001. The young talent worked his way through all of FC Basel’s youth team levels until he made his break with Basel’s 1st team, as a 17 year old in 2009. Xherdan’s 1st appearance took place during the beginning of the 2009/2010 season, where he was substituted for Valentin Stocker, in the 62nd minute, during an away match in St. Gallen.
The young Mr. Shaqiri is one of the most impressive young talents in recent Swiss football history, scoring 18 goals in 113 appearances. The sought after youngster has fought his way into the squad, winning the Swiss league twice and the cup once. He has also contributed to two of Basel’s latest Champions League campaigns. Shaqiri has collected 17 international caps for Switzerland, scoring several goals, including 3 goals during the 3:1 victory against Bulgaria during Switzerland’s Euro qualifier in September 2011.
Due to Shaqiri’s impressive start to his career, he has attracted attention on a large scale. After much speculation about the future of Mr. Shaqiri, it has been confirmed that the German giants and record champions FC Bayern Munich have bound FC Basel’s young talent with a 4 year contract.
FC Basel’s management is proud to have helped develop this young player, providing him with the opportunity to make this large next step. There is no doubt that despite the transfer, Xherdan Shaqiri will continue to contribute to his fullest ability in all 3 competitions, in order to accomplish FC Basel’s current goals.
Coach Heiko Vogel about Xherdan Shaqiri’s move to FC Bayern Munich:
“Due to his skills and talent I believe that he is definitely able to make his mark in Munich. The Bavarians can count themselves lucky to be gaining a player like Shaqiri. He is great to work with on and off the pitch. His greatest strength is his ability to work with both feet, an ability which I have hardly ever witnessed before. This player is also able to play in various positions and can be used as an “all purpose weapon”. Xherdan can be described as a street soccer player, who expresses passion for the game at all times. I believe that Xerdan is willing to learn and continuously develop his qualities. As long as he plays for Basel I am convinced that he will support us as much as his ability allows him to.”
