Before the game:
Marcel Koller played with the same central defenders as he did on the weekend against Servette FC- Emil Bergström and Omar Alderete. Eray Cömert played in defensive midfield as Taulant Xhaka was suspended. Blas Riveros replaced Raoul Petretta in midfield and Noah Okafor replaced Kevin Bua. Samuele Campo played for Luca Zuffi. Striker Kemal Ademi was chosen over Arthur Cabral who played in Geneva on the weekend.
The First Half:
The first half was quiet. The home team tried their best to attack but FCB´s defence was solid. The Russians created their best chances after half an hour of play. It was the Belgian, Wanderson who tried to work his magic with a lob over Jonas Omlin, which was saved on the line by Basel´s Silvan Widmer. Soon after Wanderson had another attempt but clearly missed the target.
In the first half we were unable to dominate against Krasnodar, but we improved in the second half
FCB were able to free themselves from the pressure which was inflicted by the home team but they failed to create any chances inside their opponents box. When FCB managed to play themselves into the penalty box, the Russians had not trouble eliminating any danger. A goalless draw was a fair result at the end of the 1st half.
The second half:
FCB appeared to start the 2nd half on a positive note, dominating the first 15 minutes. This is when the visitors crated their best chance of the night; Noah Okafor set up Fabian Frei with a great ball just outside of the box, but Frei´s shot missed the target as his contact with the ball wasn’t ideal.
The longer the fixture lasted the more it felt like the 1st leg fixture in Basel. No goals and limited chances crated by both teams. The match deciding moment happened in the 70th minute inside Basel´s box: Omar Alderete´s sliding tackle knocked over Aris, referee Bobby Maddenn decided on a penalty and Aris scored the deciding goal.
We are currently finding it difficult to create chances.
A hectic final few minutes during the last stage of the fixture followed, in which Afimico Pululu nearly headed the ball into the back of the net, missing the goal by merely a few centimetres . Jonas Omlin prevented Ari from scoring the 2:0 with an impressive save. Ari was sent off soon after, as he was shown his 2nd yellow card for pushing Omar Alderete in the face.
After The Game:
No more goals on the night; Therefore FCB fly home with their first defeat in this competition. The fact that this fixture was decided by a penalty was no coincidence as both teams created very few chances throughout the game. Based on Basel´s efforts they definitely deserve a point, but now the team returns to Switzerland with nothing apart from still leading Group C. FC Basel 1893 will try to maintain their current position in the table, as they face Trabzonspor A.S. at St. Jakob-Park in their final group stage fixture. What’s next? FCB face rivals BSC Young Boys in the Raiffeisen Super League next Sunday (St. Jakob-Park, 4pm).
